The 1940s in fashion were a time of sophistication. Chic “wartime” fashion was popular, blazers with buttons and matching skirts. Dresses had collars, distinct shoulders and sleeves and also fell at knee length. The “ideal” feminine body of the time had broad shoulders with padding and a tiny waist. Coats were an extended version of the blazer and typically synched at the waist. Typically 2 piece clothing was popular. Hats and turbans were very popular among women in the 1940s especially to protect their hair while bike riding (a stylish past time). Perhaps the most prominent designers of the time was Christian Dior and the “New Look” in 1947. Dior exuded extreme elegance in the late 40s with “A” line skirts, feminine jackets and gloves. Notable designers of the time included Piguet,Gres, Fath, Patou, Balenciaga, and Nina Ricci.
